What If?

02/27/11

It may be the ski bum’s paradox. We can’t get enough fresh snow, but also cherish that sunny, blue bird powder day. What if you could have both at once?

That’s the treat we got today, as we experienced that magical combination of sunshine and show showers for a few hours this morning.

“Sun Snow” seems impossible, and it is fairly unusual.

Combine it with single digit temperatures and the snowflakes get a special shape and glow.

For a time, it looked like someone ripped open a million down pillows and had a cosmic pillow fight thousands of miles above us.

That fortunate coincidence got me thinking about other “What if?” situations.

What if nature could defy gravity? (Oh hey, look at that…)

What if there was still some fluffy untracked powder out there? (Oh hey, look at that…)

What if even an eight year old could find those secret stashes? (Oh hey, look at that…)

What if our next big powder day was coming up soon? (Oh hey, look at that…)

What if, for once, we actually got every inch that was mentioned in the forecast?

Tonight: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 13.  Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Monday: Snow and areas of blowing snow. High near 26.  Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.

Monday Night: Snow. Low around 21.  Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.

Tuesday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 29.  Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Tuesday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 22. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Wednesday: Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

That would give us between 15 and 31 inches in the next 72 hours.

And what if it kept snowing all the way to the weekend?

It might be even better than “Sun Snow”…

And for, me, that’s a possibility worth considering.
