World Class Corduroy

02/16/12

When it comes to describing conditions on an epic powder day, there’s never a shortage of words. You can simply stand in the lift line and hear a steady stream of them pouring from the mouths of our ecstatic visitors.

You can add up the inches in the snowbox or talk about how the feathery fluff licks your kneecaps in order to paint a picture for those who aren’t here.

But it’s a little trickier to describe the perfect groomer day. It’s not ‘deep’, there are no ‘faceshots’, and yet, that sublime floating sensation can still exist even when your edges are slicing into the silky, soft corduroy instead of plunging into a field of untracked powder.

That’s the challenge I’m facing today. We’ve had a couple of inches of fresh snow this week, but the real blessing has been our overnight temperatures. They’ve dipped into the low teens or even single digits every night this week.

That dries out the surface snow, and then, when the groomers till and smooth them out, they get better and better.

Repeat that cycle at the right temperatures, and the slopes can reach a state of pure perfection.

So while we had smooth, carvable slopes yesterday, we now have smooth, silky, hero ego-stroking groomers across the mountain.

And even if there’s no deep, fluffy, epic, sick, champagne powder in our faces, we are truly enjoying the ‘champagne’ version of corduroy today.

The forecast is also boding well for the holiday weekend. (Check it out) Overnight temperatures in the teens, and even a little bit of that easy-to-describe powder possible by Saturday.
