Spring is In the Air, But Not Under the Feet

03/23/11

March definitely came in like a lion this year and has been roaring ever since!

We’ve had 60 inches of fresh snow already this month, with measurable snowfall 19 of the first 23 days in March.

So when the blue skies greeted us this morning, we sure felt like spring was finally in the air.

A little bit of fog was hanging over the lake this morning, but as you can see, the ice is starting to break up.

Fluffy white clouds and sun-drenched slopes bring out that spring-time feeling.

Families skiing together under the sun…

Kids like Michael, from Weiser, enjoying their spring break on the slopes.

But one place where it doesn’t feel like spring is under our feet!

With cool overnight temperatures and consistent snowfall (we’ve had 18″ this week), the slopes are sporting winter-quality snow.

The groomers are smooth and easy to carve…

Whether on four edges, or two…

And even the snow off-trail is surprisingly manageable.

It’s by no means deep today, but many slopes are smooth and coated with a light, forgiving topping. (South-facing slopes on the lower mountain are an exception).

So while it’s starting to look a little like springtime, it still feels a lot like winter. No sign of slush or the typical spring freeze-thaw cycle.

And with more snow in the forecast this week, it looks like March may not go away quietly after all.
