The Thrill of the Chill

04/03/11

Nasty weather didn’t keep our brave Pond Skimmers from setting new records this year during our 5th Annual Pond Skimming Contest!

We had our largest field of competitors to date. For whatever reason, 69 brave souls took a run at our icy pond.

A spring storm dumped two inches of snow on Brundage Mountain in the hours right before the contest.

These skimmers hiked up The Face in the fog to take their position at the starting line.

Some of them made it look easy:

“Yabba Dabba Do!”

But the crowd cheered the loudest for those who did it the hard way:

This guy got half way over the pond and then decided to make a quick side exit.

Crusty the Clown loses his wig, then tries to side step through the pond!

We had skiers, snowboarders, telemarkers and a mono-skier, just like in years’ past.
But something brand new this year: our very first attempt on a metal disc:

And our youngest competitor to date:

Check out this somersault:

The swan dive:

And how about the well-timed release on this guy’s bindings?

Holy Icewater, Batman!

Hundreds of spectators endured snow and sleet to take in the spectacle.

Those closest to the action also got blasted by the pond itself:

After three rounds of competition, a winner was declared.

Kevin Downey aka. “Beer Man” nailed three smooth, fast skims to take home the title.

We want to thank all of our competitors, and also give a special shout out to our rescue diver, Chris Johnson, who spent more time in the chilly pond than anyone.

Photos of all 69 competitors are available for viewing and purchase through our friends at LMP Photography. Just click on this link to enjoy the rest of the icy action!

See you next year!
