Reviving the Legacy: Youth Snowsports Competitions Return to Brundage Mountain

01/19/23

It may come as no surprise that ski racing has a long and storied history at a homegrown ski resort like Brundage Mountain. But you might be surprised to learn that the legacy of ski racing at Brundage Mountain dates back even further that the opening of the resort itself!

Brundage Mountain hosted its first ski race in February of 1961, nine months before the ski area had an operational lift, lodge or any facilities at all (unless you count a sheepherders tent at the race start). Brundage Mountain’s first racers were towed most of the way up the mountain by a “Weasel” snowcat, and they had to sidestep up to reach the top of the 56-gate course that was used as a qualifier for the Western United States Legion ski meet.

Race amenities improved dramatically in the early years with the addition of a chairlift and lodge, and over the years, the McCall ski programs produced an impressive SIX Winter Olympians, earning the town the temporary title of “Ski Town, U.S.A.”

Brundage Mountain is proud to be part of the rich legacy of ski racing and youth snowsports competition in McCall, and supporting youth snowsports remains a key part of Brundage Mountain’s vision for the future of the resort.

Like so many other things that went on hiatus over the last few years, we had a big lag in the number of events on the mountain. This season, we are stoked to be able to bring back a robust and vibrant competition schedule that will welcome many types of young competitors to the slopes of Brundage Mountain!

The competition season kicks off for us this Sunday with the Chris Bodily Memorial 4-Way Giant Slalom. This event is organized by one of our longest-standing partners, the McCall Winter Sports Club.

We’re also excited to partner with the Northwest Collegiate Ski Conference and The Boardroom McCall for upcoming events. Some of these events will require us to close select runs on select days. We will be posting those closures on the Snow Report page closer to the time of each event so you can plan your personal ride routes around the races – OR – find a safe viewpoint to watch and enjoy some of the action! Be sure to bring a cowbell!
