Brundage Mountain Records Second Snowiest December in More Than a Decade

01/01/22

December 2021 will go down in the history books as one of the snowiest Decembers on record at Brundage Mountain. The base area snow station logged 104 inches of fresh snow between December 6 and December 31. That makes it the second snowiest December in more than a decade.

The snowiest came in 2015/16, when a series of storms pounded the area just before Christmas, causing persistent power outages, but delivering 126 inches to the mountain.

An “average” December brings 55” of snow to the Brundage Mountain base area (6,000 feet elevation), so this year’s total is nearly double the average (194.5% of average, to be precise). While snow statistics are fun to follow, it’s the impact on the guest experience that really matters to the Brundage team.

“The slopes transformed very quicky from early season conditions to a powdery paradise,” says Brundage General Manager, Ken Rider. “There’s nothing better as a ski resort operator than to be able to provide a top-notch experience during Winter Break. That’s when it’s easiest for families to spend time together and that’s what it’s all about.”

Brundage Mountain has seen several record-breaking months in recent years:

  • In January of 2020, the resort logged 89-91 inches of fresh snow, compared to a 51 inch average.
  • In February of 2019, Brundage saw 151 inches of snow, compared to a 45 inch 10-year average.

“Mother Nature loves to keep us guessing, and this year she was especially mischievous,” added Rider. “We are extremely proud of our team for how they came together to manage and move the snow and keep the mountain operating smoothly day after day under these conditions. It takes a lot of hard work and they really knocked it out of the park.”
