View the “Top” Snow Sculpture at the Brundage Mountain Summit

01/22/19

The Payette Lakes Ski Patrol has created a true masterpiece with their interpretation of “Ullr: Snow God Legend”. This group’s creation has placed among the Top 3 prize winners for the past three years in a row, and this year’s sculpture is a complete show stopper!

The Ski Patrol artists crafted their rendition of “ULLR: Snow God Legend” without the luxury of running water or the ability to work outside the operating hours of the ski area.

“That’s one of the most incredible things about this streak of excellence,” said Brundage Mountain spokesperson, April Whitney. “They haul every ounce of water they use up to the summit and can’t work into the late hours of the night like other sculptors. Yet they do amazing work. This year’s sculpture is especially impressive.”

Viewing this high-altitude wonder takes some planning. The Brundage sculpture is on THE SUMMIT of the mountain, at 7,640 feet, which means guests need to ride the BlueBird Express chairlift to view it. Single ride lift tickets cost $10 per person.

Summit Sculpture Viewing Tips:

Tip #1: Come Ride

The best and easiest way to see the Brundage sculpture is between ski runs. It sits right at the top of the BlueBird Express. And, despite the crowds in town during Winter Carnival, Brundage Mountain’s slopes are surprisingly UNCROWDED.

Tip #2: Bundle Up

If you’re not a skier or snowboarder, you can still see the sculpture. Brundage Mountain sells ‘single ride’ lift tickets for $10 for those looking to view it on foot. The BlueBird Express slows down ALMOST to a stop to let you off, but you’ll need to exit the chair on a snowy ramp, so bundle up and WEAR SNOWBOOTS.

Tip #3: Timing is Everything

Skiers and snowboarders are often eager to lap the slopes in the morning hours. If you plan to visit the sculpture on foot, you’ll want to arrive later in the afternoon when the passionate powder hounds have slowed down a bit. The last ride down the BlueBird Express is at 4:30, so visiting between 2:00 and 4:00 will still allow plenty of time to see this beautiful work of art.

Proceeds from the single ride tickets will go toward the purchase of a new AED (automated external defibrillator) unit on behalf of Payette Lakes Ski Patrol and Brundage Mountain.

ULLR: Snow God Legend

Who is Ullr, anyway?

A product of Norse mythology, Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) has been dubbed the God of Snow, Patron Saint of Skiers, the son of Sif and stepson of Thor, the God of Thunder. Cold-loving, bow-wielding Ullr is said to be an expert skier, skater and bow hunter. A true ski town legend, alpine enthusiasts have made it a ritual to make annual sacrifices to Ullr in hopes of securing a long, snowy winter. Naturally, he is a revered figure at the home of the Best Snow in Idaho.
