The Whole Story

01/22/12

It’s the seventh day of a week that saw us measuring our snowfall with a yard stick rather than a ruler.

So the idea of a mere 3 inches of fresh snow didn’t really seem that exciting.

But snow totals don’t tell the whole story on a day like today.

We started out with two inches of fresh, fluffy snow this morning. Again, not an impressive total nowadays.

But, the skies cleared early this morning revealing an enchanting scene. Our entire mountain landscape was flocked with fresh, fluffy snow.

When I tipped my skis off the summit ridge I expected to feel a crust under that freshly fallen snow. But thanks to low overnight temperatures, what I got instead was a familiar, fluid, floating feeling.

The new layer of champagne powder made a decadent topping for the runs smoothed out by our groomers last night.

As usual,  a little searching turned up some incredible lines off-trail where the snow was just as light and twice as deep. We skied under blue skies for most of the morning before another round of clouds moved in, bringing us a third inch of powdery pleasure.

Statistically speaking, today won’t rank in the record books. But it’s at the top of the charts for outperforming expectations.
