Who Would Have Thought?

05/05/11

As I sit down on Cinco De Mayo to write a blog post about our snow conditions, I can’t stop thinking about how UNUSUAL this winter has been.

Right now, we have 88 inches – (over SEVEN feet!) – of snow sitting in the base area, with 132 inches – (ELEVEN feet!) – on the summit.

(The photos you see here are from today.)

We had incredible snow conditions this past weekend, and now, the forecast is calling for fresh snow on Mother’s Day!

I think back to Thanksgiving weekend last fall as we longingly watched the sky, begging  for just a little bit more snow, wishing we were open and wondering if La Nina was just a bunch of hype….

Now, obviously, we know better. La Nina didn’t show up early, but she is definitely sticking around this Spring!

Even more amazing than the snow depths is the lack of melting. We lost just 6″ at the base and just 3″ on the summit this week, even as we enjoyed sunshine and saw a MAJOR melt-off down in McCall.

While I can now see my yard and a clear roof on my house down in town, the only sign of dirt in our base area is our parking lot.

Normally, tree wells would be well melted away and slopes would be ‘showing dirt’ as we say.

Not this Spring. Not even after two sunny, warm days!

We still have snow piled on the roofs of our buildings and all around our parking lots and tree wells.

Forecasters are making all kinds of predictions for this weekend (that happens a lot in the Spring, when they can’t tell what will happen.) But the strongest, most confident prediction we’re seeing is for FRESH SNOW above 5,000 feet for Mother’s Day on Sunday. (Our base is at 5,840).

So as long as it’s going to be raining and soggy in the valleys down below, why not bring Mom up for a remarkable day on the slopes???

(It’s also Second Sunday – so our pass holders can bring a friend for free. )

While it looks like La Nina may well return next year, who knows if she’ll stick around long enough to bring us fresh snow two Mother’s Days in a row?
