Untracked Powder for Bonus Weekend #1

04/15/11

We are ready for our first Bonus Weekend of the season, and Mother Nature is smiling down on Brundage Mountain!

We’ve had 7″ of fresh snow this week, and I got to make a quick check of the slope conditions as our mountain crews prepped the lifts today.

It’s hard to know what the snow will be like when we get a few inches here, a few inches there, a few days since we’ve been able to ‘sample’ the slopes. But even half-way through the month of April, it is mid-winter powder snow!

Measuring the ‘fresh snow’ at the summit, we found between 6″ and 12″, with the average at around 7″-8″. But the question this time of year, how much of that remains powdery as you descend the mountain?

You may recognize Ian as one of our hard-working lift operators. (He’s often at the bottom of Lakeview). Here’s Ian demonstrating the soft, powdery turns at the top of the mountain.

Now, he’s about half-way down the mountain – still light and fluffy! (Always focused on our guests, you’ll notice how these guys are skiing the same line so they don’t track out too much of that delightful snow.)

As Topher’s turns tell you, the groomed runs are also in top shape. Smooth, soft, velvety and REALLY forgiving.

It looks like we could pick up another couple inches of fresh snow tonight, so tomorrow morning should be sweet!

For those aching for a sun-kissed corn-snow goggle-tan day…don’t give up yet. We plan to be open weekends AT LEAST through May 1. And if the weather stays ‘wintery’ like it has so far…we’re even more likely to add extra bonus weekends well in to the month of May.

Stay tuned!

– April
