Salute to the Foul-Weather Skier

03/15/09

If you’ve spent much time in the mountains, you’ve probably heard some chatter about the ‘fair-weather skier’ (or rider,  take your pick.) These are the people who prefer to visit on sunny, ‘Blue Bird’ days, and tend to flock to the mountains for warm-weather spring skiing. Despite the fact that Spring officially begins in just five days, this was no day for the fair weather slider. Today was definitely for those cut from a different cloth: the decidedly “foul-weather” folk who not only endure wet, stormy, blustery conditions, but actually seem to be inspired by them.

I, for one, have not had my fill of foul weather this year. While it can bring out the snot-cicles, make it tough to see, and leave your fingers a little chilly, it is also the stuff that brings us our most beloved gift: the Powder Day. So here’s a salute to our foul-weather friends.

The people in these photos are a little hard to pick out under the bundles of clothing, through the fog, and behind the giant snowflakes, but believe me, they are happy to be here watching the snow pile up inch by inch…hour by hour…smile by smile.

031509snowcam1We’d picked up 8 inches of fresh snow as of 4pm on Sunday, and the forecast is calling for another foot or more by Monday night.

I expect to see many more of our foul-weather friends tomorrow, and hopefully, for many more powder days to come.

So for those who check our webcams religiously,
start to drool once you see neon colors on the infrared satellite picture, endure a frozen beard and a chapped face, we at Brundage Mountain sincerely salute you!
