Top 5 Things to Love About Spring Skiing

03/09/12

We had CLASSIC Spring snow conditions today, and there are hundreds of smiling faces up here to prove it.

Why is it that days like today make us SO happy?

Let’s take a quick look at the top 5 things to LOVE about Spring skiing…

#1. The Date on the Calendar is Irrelevant

Yes, I know that it’s not officially ‘Spring’ until March 20, and we don’t even “Spring Forward” until tomorrow night…

But, come on!!! For skiers and snowboarders, spring begins the first warm, sunny day when we know the snow it going to transform into our second-favorite form.

# 2. No Hurry, No Worry
There’s a certain urgency on a powder day…to get up in time for first chair…hustle to your favorite run…get to the next fresh line before someone else does…get your fill of faceshots before your goggles rime up or your legs give out.

None of that really happens on a spring day. The slopes start out a little firmer, a little faster. There’s nothing you can do to change that. So you can chill out and enjoy what the day has to offer. Take in the unobstructed views.

Go ahead and warm those legs up, because with blue skies and warm air temperatures, comfort and cold are not an issue.

Which brings us to number three….

#3. Lightness and Brightness

No need to bundle up under layer after layer of insulating clothing, or worry about whether your hand warmers are still working. (Do people really use those?). Days like today allow you to travel LIGHT. Yes, be sure to bring the chapstick WITH the SPF (and maybe a Pabst?), but there’s a great feeling of freedom in knowing your lightest coat and thinnest gloves are more than enough to get you through the day.

Add to that, the confidence that your goggles are merely there to shield your eyes from the abundant sunshine with no worries of fog or moisture, and you’re now unencumbered from enjoying your crystal clear surroundings.

#4. Friends are a Bonus

For all the talk about ‘no friends on a powder day’ and the fears of someone (even someone you adore) stealing your best line, friends are nothing but an asset on a Spring skiing day.

The slopes will soften up when they decide to, and rather than competing for the best lines, your comrades can help fill the time with great conversation, AND help you time your mountain tour JUST RIGHT in order to hit the sweet spots as they migrate from South to North.

Not to mention the FUN of sharing some creamy, dreamy turns with your favorite people. The only thing better than getting a face full of champagne powder yourself is watching your friends giggle as they lay big rail turns in an open slush field.

#5 Apres (Spring) Ski

No seats left at the bar? No worries. When the weather is like this, you can sit outside on a deck or even the tailgate of a truck in the parking lot and enjoy HOURS of great after-ski cocktailing and rehydrating.

Speaking of which…I’ll see you next time!
