4.7 Mile Loop Now Open to Hikers and Uphill Bikers

06/03/16

Black Bear Loop 127006Wishes are coming true for cross-country bikers and hikers, as Brundage Mountain opens a 4.7 mile loop to two-way traffic and foot travelers.

We have now designated three trails as ‘multi-directional, multi-use’ trails. That means those who like to gain elevation under their own person-power have a few different ways to do so. (In the past, ALL of our mountain biking trails were downhill only).
TwoWayTraffic700

The most highly-used trails will remain downhill only for our guests’ safety, so don’t expect any traffic changes on Elk Trail, Growler, Hidden Valley, Zorro or High Voltage.

Where riders WILL want to pay extra attention is on Black Bear and Black Bear Loop. Those trails are now be open to two-way traffic as well as foot traffic. To access Black Bear and Black Bear Loop, uphill riders and hikers can head south from the Lodge through the Triple Play Skills Park and onto Black Bear or Black Bear Loop. Bikers have the option of riding the lower part of Growler (see map above) on their way back to the lodge. Hikers are not allowed on Growler, and will need to return via one of the Black Bear options.

These trails were chosen for two-way traffic because of their proximity to the base area and also because they see less overall use and include some wider areas to make space for different kinds of traffic. Some of our summer crew members hit the trail today to do some product testing. The trail offers a combination of single track, double track and dirt/gravel roads.

Most of the trail is in the canopy, so it’s less exposed with nice, tacky dirt that holds the moisture well. The trail should be in top shape right from the beginning. (Our opening day is Saturday, June 18.)

While this may not be the most epic uphill challenge in the area, tackling this loop definitely got our crew’s blood pumping.

For hikers, the trail would be considered moderate and would take most seasoned hikers 2 to 2-1/2 hours to complete.

The one-mile hiking trail we opened in the base area two summers ago has been very popular and this new option will allow hikers to explore more of the mountain.

The 4.72 mile loop offers a moderate but mostly shady hike and serves up some great views from the southwest side of Brundage Mountain.

And – just a reminder – dogs are not allowed on our trails during operating hours. (For the safety of both the dogs and bikers). View Summer Operating Hours Here. We have a Pet Area on the west end of the upper parking lot where you are welcome to bring your pets. We ask that all dogs remain on leashes around the lodge and in the grassy areas in the base area and that humans clean up any waste left behind.

We are excited to hear what you think of these changes. We invite you to come check out ‘The Loop’ and share your thoughts here on the blog!
