On the Stage: Voice of Reason

Voice of Reason takes the stage at 6 pm.

In 1988 the song writer and arranger, “Ras Hoon”, started to study and write Reggae music influenced by Peter Tosh,Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer. Andrew Furnee played bass guitar in his first Reggae band, “Active Culture”, and has been a collaborator since then. Both became members in a Reggae Band called 8750 in Telluride Colorado. After 8750’s first tour of the West from Cali to B.C and back down the East slope of the Rockies to Arizona, Ras Hoon went on Pilgrimage to Jamaica by invite from Earl “Chinna” Smith to record at “High Times Records” in Kingston. The decision was made on the plane over to go to Westmoreland and learn the Culture from Rastafari Elders and get to know the people in the bush.

While in Jamaica he formed a trio with some local musicians,”Ras Paul” and “Ras Thirteen” calling that project “The Core”. Hoony lingered to gain more experience while backing many singers from the region; his two week trip ended up lasting seven months! Cateye was one of the singers who really made an impression and his style comes through some of the tunes. Upon returning to Colorado 8750 continued to tour up to two hundred dates a year for several years and worked as supporting act for all of the great Reggae names, I’m not kidding. Bunny Wailer would be,in my mind, the biggest honor; then there is Black Uhuru,The Wailers Band(four times), James Brown(the biggest thrill), Lucky Dube, Steel Pulse,Toots and the Maytals (five times),Culture, Clinton Fearon, and the Melodians. The list goes on.

After migrating to Boise in 2005 Hoony and Furnee founded VOR and began performing in the area at first as a three piece, but eventually growing into a fierce, full bodied entity that had Heralding Horns, the growl and chirp of Hammond Organ, the Clavinet croaking like frogs in the jungle, feeding the Drum and the Bass, and taunting a rough and rude guitar. That sound…earthy, deliberate, original Roots Rock Reggae. Like the old school, Real REGgae for REGular people, like Toots first said.
