Avalanche Science Guides Level 1+

Step into the world of backcountry safety with the Avalanche Science ASG1 Course, a comprehensive 3-day program designed for skiers and riders eager to build a solid foundation in avalanche awareness, snowpack understanding, and safe mountain travel.

This 3-day version of ASG1 blends field experience, classroom sessions, and online learning to give you the skills and confidence needed to make informed decisions in the backcountry.

Course Overview
  • 3 Field Days – On-snow instruction and touring at Brundage Mountain and surrounding McCall terrain
  • Interactive Classroom Sessions – Avalanche fundamentals, weather impacts, and decision-making frameworks
  • Online Pre-Course Learning – 8 hours of video and multimedia content completed prior to the course
Course Content
  • Understanding avalanche types and the factors that trigger them
  • Recognizing avalanche terrain and assessing slope hazards
  • Reading snowpack layers and weather influences
  • Route selection, safe travel protocols, and group management
  • Introduction to transceiver use and basic companion rescue techniques
