Bonus Weekend Outlook

We’re just a couple days away from our first Bonus Weekend of the season, and we are counting down the hours until the lifts start turning again .

We didn’t get much in the way of fresh snow this week, but the slopes and weather are shaping up for the next best thing…corn snow and sunshine!

The forecast looks a little bit deceiving; it’s displaying clouds and snowflakes through the weekend. But if you take a closer look at the percentages, you’ll see a different picture.

Friday Update: The NWS changed Saturday’s Chance of snow to 20%….and MOSTLY SUNNY skies. Latest forecast.

Just for comparison, this is what today looked like. The prediction was cloudy skies and a 60% chance of snow.

And here’s what that looks like:

I don’t mean to pick on the forecasters. The weather in the mountains is unpredictable, especially in the spring time. I just don’t want our visitors to be deterred by the snowflake icon on the forecast bar.

If this is what ‘cloudy’ and ’60% chance of snow’ looks like, I can only imagine how much sunshine we might see with ’30% chance of snow’ and ‘partly sunny’.

Of course the weather is only one factor. Slope conditions are key. We had some REALLY warm temperatures early this week, but now we’re back in that desirable freeze/thaw cycle.

The forecast is calling for overnight temperatures of 19-23 tonight, with highs of 31-41 tomorrow, then 20-24 degrees Friday night, 32-43 degrees Saturday, 25-28 degrees Saturday night and 38-48 Sunday. That’s just the kind of cycle that could produce some really sweet corn snow. And it’s just the kind of forecast that gets me daydreaming about some of my favorite spring days past…

The joy of an untouched corn field.

The sensation of swooping down a sun-kissed slope.

And the camaraderie of sharing the long spring days with good friends.

I’ve been accused of having a positive outlook when it comes to slope conditions. But as a person who follows the slope conditions and forecasts religiously, I’m pretty excited about the prospects for this weekend. And unlike the weather forecasters based 100+ miles away, I will be testing my predictions right along with our other visitors to see how they compare to those of the ‘pros’.
